Ms. Gwendolyn Hammonds

Entering into the world, Sunday, January 5, 1964 a baby girl was born to Hosie L. (Hardimon) Hammonds and she was named Gwendolyn, affectionately called Gwen. Her foundation of faith began at home with her mother which led to her being a member of Greater St. James Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Abraham Byrd. Even as a young lady she served as the church secretary at Greater St. James M.B. Church. Later in her Adult life, she joined New Heart Ministries under the leadership of Apostle Lillia Campbell, where she served as Matron of Women, Church Secretary, Youth Program Leader and Outreach volunteer. Gwen secured New Heart Ministries first outreach grant for the summer feeding program. She love coordinating every Black History, Easter and Christmas program at the church. Gwen was mighty in her faith and was always eager to share her faith with anyone. She was always thankful that her children and grandchildren served the Lord together with her in Ministry. As graduate of Alton Senior High School class of 1982, she continued her education with a certification in child care. Known to be the family child care provider and by her words the favorite Aunt. Whether you called her Momma, Aunt Gwen, Momma G, Baby Sis, Granny or Nana she wore each title well. Employed at Venture retail store, Alton Housing Authority, where some of duties included cooking for the Senior Citizens and organizing youth activities. Always dedicated to the community she served as a Girl Scout Leader, 4th Ward Volunteer and School Volunteer. Gwen had a special love for her family and was always ready for a family gathering. Her door was always open to family and friends. She was preceded in death by her Mother, brothers, Lewis, Mack and Ollie Hammonds; Sisters, Annie Mae Stiff and Betty Jean Hammonds. Leaving to honor and cherish her memory, daughters, Nea and LeeAnn Hammonds, Bonus daughters, Sharron Braxton, Jacquayla Buc hanan and Zhantalle Stiff, Goddaughter, Bianca Williams, Godson, Hosaiah Stiff. Grandchildren, Khaliayah, Ja’Maya, Ayvah and Amear. Bonus grandchildren, T.J., Jaxyn, Jayden and Tiana. Sisters, Maggie Hammonds and Dora Hammonds. Brothers, Ronald Hammonds, John Hammonds and Calvin Hammonds. Sisters-in-love, Sandra, Cheryl (Shug), and Debbie. She had a special bond with her niece, Elishia (Peaches) Womack. Aunt Johnnie Mae Hardimon, Life-long friends, Niecy Williams, Shawn Matlock and Lynette Danzy. A host of loyal nieces, dedicated nephews and loving cousins, family members and friends.
